Box Office Report: Weekend of January 31-February 2

Two new films opened: This Awkward Life and Labor Day

  1. Ride Along- Once again the Kevin Hart/Ice Cube buddy cop comedy took the number one spot. It made $12 million bringing its total gross to $92.7 million. It cost Universal $25 million to make.
  2. Frozen- Disney’s latest animated feature just won’t die. It made $9 million bringing its total gross to $359.6 million. It cost Disney $150 million to make
  3. That Awkward Moment- The new romantic comedy staring Zac Efron made $8.7 million. It cost Focus Features $8 million to make. Amongst critics the film is getting trashed. It holds a 22% on Rotten Tomatoes and a 39 on Metacritic.
  4. The Nut Job- The latest animated feature from Open Road Films made $7.3 million bringing its total gross to $50 million. It cost the studio $42 million to make.
  5. Lone Survivor- Universal’s war film film made $7.1 million bringing its total gross to $104.8 million. It cost the studio $40 million to make. With this and Ride Along it has been a profitable year thus far.
  6. Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit-  The latest Jack Ryan film made $5.3 million bringing its total gross to $38.9 million. It cost Paramount $60 million to make. A loss for the studio unless this becomes a hit on home video.
  7. Labor Day-  Jason Reitman’s latest made $5.2 million. It cost Paramount $18 million to make. This one has not been well-received by critics. It holds a 32% on Rotten Tomatoes and a 51 on Metacritic.
  8. American Hustle- Made $4.2 million bringing its total gross to $133.5 million. Cost Sony $40 million to make.
  9. I, Frankenstein– Made $3.8 million bringing its total gross $14.7 million. A loss for Lionsgate as it cost $65 million to make.
  10. The Wolf of Wall Street– Made $3.4 million, bringing its total gross to $104 million. Cost Paramount $100 million to make. It finally made its budget back.
