Continuing Network TV’s current run of remaking classic musicals, Fox has announced a new TV version of the cult film, The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Working with Lou Adler (the original film’s producer), High School Musical and Hocus Pocus director Kenny Ortega will be heading this project. No word yet on an air date or cast member.
The story of the show starts when recently engaged straight-laced couple Brad and Janet get stuck in a creepy mansion during a stormy night. They soon witness the power of Dr. Frank N. Furter, a sweet transvestite from from Transsexual, Transylvania. After creating a dream sex partner, a golden-haired muscled being named Rocky, the characters discover new sexual desires that they never unleashed before. This all builds until, two members of the doctor’s staff (Riff Raff and Magenta) are revealed to be (along with the doctor) space aliens.
Inspired by old science fiction movie, B-pictures, 1950s rock n roll, to name a few; Richard O’Brien created the show for the stage in the early 1970s and would soon hit Broadway in 1975. Music producer Lou Adler and theater director Jim Sharman would later bring the story to film with Tim Curry as Dr. Frank N. Furter. Other cast members include Susan Sarandon as Janet, Barry Bostwick as Brad, Richard O’Brien as Riff Raff and Meatloaf as biker/victim Eddie.
Production staff stated that they have no plans to changes the playbook or the music and lyrics, but they will have some new ideas about the imagery in the film.
For me, I don’t hate the idea of remaking the musical, But I really see no reason to it as a network TV movie on network TV. I personally would rather they just went all the way and try to get away with more weird content. Maybe I’ll watch, but most likely I will not.
How about you guys? Who is going to watch this? Let us know in the comments.
