Internet Upset When Black Actors Play Black Characters

In recent months we have had stories where people have argued that it’s time for a black James Bond, or that argument about “It’s Time for a Black Magneto.”  Not to mention COUNTLESS reports and pleas for the necessity to have more racial diversity in Hollywood movies and television.  I’ll admit that some more diversity would be good, however I stay out of the controversies about if we really needed a black Human Torch or a Black James Bond.  But with all these demands for multiculturalism and greater representation in Hollywood – why are people upset when Black characters appropriately play Black characters?

A live production of THE WIZ premiered on NBC tonight – and it’s shocking how many people were offended that this show was being presented with an all-black cast. In fact, they’ve proclaimed that it’s RACIST for this to have an all-black cast.

In case you didn’t know… THE WIZ was a Brodway musical in 1975, specifically written for an all-black cast.  It was made into a movie in 1978, again with an all black cast including Diana Ross and Michael Jackson. (Late 70s Michael Jackson – before he turned all creepy and pale).

Maybe people just forgot about that?  Maybe they didn’t do their research?  However, I find it really hard to believe that people forgot that we already had an all white version of The Wiz… it was called The Wizard of Oz.

Yeah… remember this? From the all-white “Golden Age” of Hollywood?

Okay, I get just as irked as everyone else when I see too many posts in my feed arguing for more diversity by changing white characters into black ones.  Yes, we need diversity but the better way to achieve that is to create more original black characters – to get more black director, writers and producers behind the camera to create more compelling black characters.  There is a lot of debate about America and the Internet becoming too PC (which it is)… but THIS is not the correct way to address that fear.  You don’t demand that an all black show whitewash its characters for the sake of diversity… that’s being stupid.  That kind of ignorant racism is WHY the internet is becoming frighteningly PC.

You don’t like an all black adaptation of The Wizard of Oz that’s been around since 1978?  Don’t bitch about it, don’t make yourself an idiot by calling it racist… Just go watch Ken Russell’s White Dog and call it a night.

*Facepalm* That the problem with zealots they dont want to see the logic that does not fit in there little box. i have always felt that changing the race/sex of characters for a no reason other then because IS racist/sexist.

One other thing Sam Fuller directed White Dog not Ken Russell, Also if anyone reading this has never seen it do so its an awesome film.
