“Jem and the Holograms” Movie In The Works- UPDATE 4/26/14

tumblr_n4gt8rVg061sjef85o1_1280 “G.I. Joe: Retaliation” director Jon M. Chu, “Paranormal Activity” producer Jason Bloom and Justin Bieber’s manager Scooter Braun announced on Thursday via Youtube they are making a live-action adaptation of the cult classic ‘80s cartoon “Jem and the Holograms.” A unique form of crowdsourcing will be used to make this film. Rather then asking for money the producers are asking fans to donate their creativity. They have asked fans to submit video submissions on the movie’s Tumblr page explaining what it is they love about “Jem.” There is also a casting call open to kids of any age or gender, and to audition they have to upload to the Tumblr a two-minute video showcasing their talents. Costuming ideas and songs can also be submitted. “This is the real way we’re making our movie,” Chu says. “This is not a contest; this is actually how we’re putting things together.” More “assignments” will be announced on the Tumblr in the following weeks. Chu is directing from a script by up-and-comer Ryan Landels. Production is set to start in the spring. According to the Hollywood Reporter the plot “centers on an orphaned teenage girl who becomes an online recording sensation. She and her sisters embark on a music-driven scavenger hunt — one that sends them on an adventure across Los Angeles in an attempt to unlock a final message left by her father.” According the producers the film will have themes of “being true to who you are in a multitasking, hyperlinked social media age.” “Jem and the Holograms” ran from 1985 to 1988. It was made by the same team that created “G.I. Joe” and “Transformers.” The story centered around Jerrica Benton and her friends, who have secret identities as the pop band Jem and the Holograms. They maintain this secret through advanced holographic technology that allows them to change their appearance and do anything else the plot required. Most of their adventures centered around them maintaining their two separate identities and battling with rival bands. UPDATE: Jon Chu has announced the leads of “Jem.” Aubrey Peeples of Nashville fame and Sharknado infamy will play Jem. Stafanie Scott (Wreck-It Ralph), Hayley Kiyoko (The Fosters), and Aurora Perrineau (A House Is Not a Home) have been cast as Kimber, Aja and Shana, respectively. tumblr_n4isiw8WpZ1tv61rvo1_r3_1280 Has the cast or the poster peaked your interest?
