Two pivotal roles for the upcoming Batman/Superman movie have been cast.
Jesse Eisenberg (“The Social Network,” “Zombieland) will play Superman’s nemesis Lex Luthor. Jeremy Irons (“The Borgias” “Reversal of Fortune”) will play Batman’s butler/mentor Alfred.
“Lex Luthor is often considered the most notorious of Superman’s rivals, his unsavory reputation preceding him since 1940,” director Zack Snyder said in a press release. “What’s great about Lex is that he exists beyond the confines of the stereotypical nefarious villain. He’s a complicated and sophisticated character whose intellect, wealth, and prominence position him as one of the few mortals able to challenge the incredible might of Superman. Having Jesse in the role allows us to explore that interesting dynamic, and also take the character in some new and unexpected directions.”
Snyder added: “As everyone knows, Alfred is Bruce Wayne’s most trusted friend, ally and mentor, a noble guardian and father figure,” Synder said. “He is an absolutely critical element in the intricate infrastructure that allows Bruce Wayne to transform himself into Batman. It is an honor to have such an amazingly seasoned and gifted actor as Jeremy taking on the important role of the man who mentors and guides the guarded and nearly impervious façade that encapsulates Bruce Wayne.”
The currently untitled Batman vs. Superman movie is set for release on May 6, 2016. It will be a sequel to the 2013 blockbuster “Man of Steel.” “Argo” screenwriter Chris Terriro is writing the script from a story by David S. Goyer. Henry Cavill is returning as Superman, Ben Affleck will play Batman and Gal Gadot will play Wonder Woman/Princess Diana. Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne and Diane Lane will also reprise their roles from “Man of Steel.”
Editorial Comment: Jeremy Irons is a fantastic choice for the role of Alfred. When you look at the previous actors that have played the character Irons fits in perfectly. Eisenberg as Luthor is a rather interesting choice. Entertainment Weekly said it best: “Lex Luthor has always been a figure of power, strength and charisma. Eisenberg, on the other hand, is an actor known for his radiating anxiety, and a crushing social awkwardness.” However I like Jesse Eisenberg so I will give him a chance.
