New “Weird Al” Album Coming

MandatoryFun

On July 15, 2014, famed parody song writer “Weird Al” Yankovic will be releasing his 15th album: “Mandatory Fun”. Currently, no singles have been released and little is known of the styles or artists he will be putting his own unique spin on. One noted statement came from comedian Patton Oswalt:

“He satirizes a band I’ve worshiped since the 90s and it…is…beautiful.”

On June 18, he had posted an amazon pre-order link for the album on his Facebook page and three hours later, he posted this statement.

You guys CRASHED the pre-order link!! It’s working now, if you’d like to try again…

Later in the day, he released this message:

Wow… “Mandatory Fun” is currently the #1 best-selling album on Amazon!!! Unbelievable – thanks, everybody!!!

Since the early 1980’s, Yankovic has been writing parodies of popular songs,  including “Like a Surgeon,” “Smells like Nirvana,” and “Fat.” He also writes songs that make fun of a band’s or even a genre’s musical tropes and lyrical themes, such as “I’ll Sue Ya” in response to Rage Against the Machine, “Bedrock Anthem” as a parody of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and “Weasel Stomping Day” which is a twisted take on classic holiday songs.

With his comeback “Straight Outta Lynwood” in 2003 and his most recent release “Alpocalypse” in 2011, he’s once again becoming a bigger entertainment and pop culture figure. Most musical stars consider it an honor if he decides to turn their work into comedy gold and others, like the rapper Coolio, have issues with his work.

He also has quite the acting career, having appeared as himself and as other characters in shows like “30 Rock” and “Childrens Hospital”. He has also become a noted voice actor, having parts in cartoons Like “Batman: The Brave and The Bold”, “The Simpsons”, “Adventure Time” and “My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic”.

“I truly love what I do, and if I ever stop working, it won’t be of my own free will,” said Weird Al on his new album.

Are you guys ready for this new album? Who do you want to be given the Weird Al treatment?
