Peter Mayhew To Return As Chewbacca For “Star Wars: Episode VII”

It’s official, Chewbacca is coming back for the next “Star Wars” film.

The Hollywood Reporter reported on Monday that Peter Mayhew, who played the wookie in the original trilogy, will be reprising his role for the upcoming “Star Wars: Episode VII.” Many speculated Mayhew would be reprising his role due to his cancellation of an upcoming appearance at the Texas convention Comicpalooza, which is scheduled for May 23-26.

Last week Disney Studios chairman Alan Thorn announced that filming has already begun and most of the cast is set. While no names have been confirmed the Hollywood Reporter reported recently that “Girls” star Adam Driver will be playing a villain. Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher are also said to be reprising their roles.

The film is set to hit theaters on Dec. 18, 2015. J.J. Abrams is directing from a script he co-wrote with “Empire Strikes Back” writer Lawrence Kasdan. The film will take place 30 years after “Return of the Jedi.”

LucasFilm or Disney had no comment.
