Earlier this month the Internet was abuzz with activity after director Richard Donner announced a sequel to “The Goonies” is in the works. Donner dropped another big piece of news regarding the Goonies sequel during an interview with TMZ on Monday: Steven Spielberg is on board and has come up with the story for the sequel.
“Hopefully we’re going to get this done, period. Spielberg came up with the idea of doing a sequel after 30 years,” Donner said. “You don’t do it without him, and he came up with another storyline and he’s right on.”
Spielberg came up with the story for the first “Goonies” film while Chris Columbus wrote the screenplay. Spielberg also executive produced the film.
According to /Film the most recent draft of the script involved the children of the original Goonies going on their own adventure. While no casting decision have yet been made all of the original cast, including Josh Brolin, have expressed interested in reprising their roles.
“God knows, it’s up to them. If they have any sense they will, if they don’t they won’t,” said Donner.
Two weeks ago Ain’t It Cool News reported that “The Goonies 2” has been fast-tracked by Warner Bros. and Donner, Spielberg and Columbus are currently looking for a writer and director.
