If you were going to think of an example of live action entertainment that may as well be a cartoon, it would most likely be The Three Stooges. Well, Christy Karacas of Superjail fame plans to do just that.
Originally a vaudeville act in the 1920s, the stooges became American comedy icons in the 1930s and 1940s. With the main line up being Moe, Larry, and Curly, their films where famous for their Looney Tunes style of comedy. Complete with one liners, slapping, punching, hitting each other with blunt objects, saws to the face, eye poking, falling down steps, and numerous kinds of food being launched into many faces. After the death of Curly, the group had many line-up changes though the late 1940s to the 1970s. It ended when Moe and Larry passed on. The group had lived on though reruns of their shorts and movies and other forms of media, including a video game.
The series is being developed by a family entertainment company named Cake. They are working with animation creators Titmouse and the owners of the Stooges’s estate. Currently they are looking for funding for the project and will be showing off their pitch at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival and the licensing expo LIMA. When asked about the show, Titmouse president Chris Prynoski released this statement:
“I grew up watching The Three Stooges with my father. When I signed on to helm this new show, I made a blood oath to my Dad that I would treat the Stooges brand like it was a newborn baby Fabergé egg. With the cartoon making team we have lined up at Titmouse, it’s sure to be the most batty, bananas, insanely giggle-inducing version of the Three Stooges your eyeballs and brainhole have ever experienced. Dad, I won’t let you down!”
Christy Karacas has already created an animatic and will be directing the full pilot. If they are successful, the plan is to produce 52 11 minute segments. No word yet on where or when the show is planning to be released.
When I first saw the character designs, I thought John Kricfalusi was working on this. I have no idea why Larry looks like a balloon and why Curly just looks evil, but they seem to still be in the early stages. Second, I don’t know what you can really do with these characters. I like the original shorts, but there is only so many times you can see three morons bitch slap each other. ~But we will just have to wait and see.
What do you guys think? Who would like to see this? Let us know in the comments.
