YT Network FullScreen Demonstrates #PowerToTheCreators With Monetization Of Competitor’s Video

Content creators h3h3Productions (known for their comedy commentary reaction videos) recently discovered that all You Tubers are not created equal when their most popular video was monetized due to a questionable copyright claim. The claimant was the Fullscreen Network (home of clients such as Rooster Teeth and ScrewAttack), whose tagline is ironically #PowerToTheCreators. The claim was made due to h3h3 doing critical commentary & parody of a “kissing pranks” video by Pranks Invasion*. While this appears on the surface to be a fair use issue, the fact that Fullscreen had tried to recruit h3h3 to their network weeks earlier (which was refused) shines a bit more doubt on the situation.

Needless to say, h3h3 owner Ethan Klein  was less than happy and decided to share his feelings:

…and as quickly as a college professor has to apologize for using the wrong pronouns on a student, social media had a few choice words on the issue:

But a bit later, things began to become a bit more…insidious:

…culminating in this rather ominous tweet from Klein:

Although some of us at Geek Juice use You Tube and MCMs, there’s reason why many of our videos are hosted on Springboard:the grossly-deficient content ID system they have in place. Fair use laws have still not been properly re-defined in the digital age and as such abuse of those systems is still rampant. The undercurrent of this being a “revenge” campaign also leaves a bitter taste in the mouth as well.

But what concerns us more is that this situation once again reinforces ‘Icecube’s Razor’:

“Big bank take little bank”

UPDATE: as of 8pm EST 8/4/2015, Fullscreen’s twitter account has only tweeted once on a non-related subject…but there are plenty of acidic replies.

And unfortunately, 9 minutes later Klein tweeted this:

We’ll keep updating this article as more information comes to light.

I strongly advocate going directly for the pocketbooks of these pricks.
Unsubscribing from RvB, RWBY, and all of ScrewAttack until their parent decides that attacking independent creators is not okay.
I love these series, but I cannot in clear conscience support this behaviour, and I wholeheartedly encourage anyone who feels the same to do the same.
