Charlie brought up something I’ve always wondered with sitcoms: What did the studio audience see when they were filming them when they did something cartoony or required a lot of special effects?

Since he used Night Court, I will as well because there were a couple bits I remember on there that made me think what the studio audience saw when they were taping those episodes: In one episode, we see Judge Stone admonishing an unseen defendant, only for said defendant revealed to be an animated Wile E. Coyote, superimposed between Markie Post and John Laroquette Roger Rabbit-style. In another, a group of TOS Trekkies and TNG Trekkies who where fighting at a Star Trek convention (it was the late ’80s, go with it) are brought before Judge Stone, and before he can hand down the punishment, the group being punished is like “I don’t think so” and they are beamed away.
